THE FELLOWSHIP

A real bet on you.

We give exceptional young people grants from $1K to $50K and introductions to the right people, to unblock them and get them on the right path.

SOLVE A PROBLEM WORTH DEDICATING YOUR LIFE TO

Mostly companies. Not only companies.

We believe business is one of the most powerful mechanisms for scaling solutions to important problems, so most of what we back will be commercial companies. But we are not limited to them. We will also fund research and media brands. A TikTok account or YouTube channel about an important issue is fully considered, and you don't need to be technical to apply. Elite mentors, VCs, scientists, researchers, and public policy people are there to help when you want it.

THE MONEY

$1K to $50K. 0% equity.

$1K–$50Ksized to what you need
0%equity taken
Up to $25Kin compute/cloud credits
Introsto the right people

Grants are sized to what you actually need, and most will be lower than $50K. You show results to unlock more. Some people need more money. Some need more connections and intros. Many need both. A small grant might cover equipment, travel, or a first prototype; a larger one can give you the freedom to work full-time, without a day job, classes, or rent stress pulling at your attention. Funds can go toward reasonable living expenses, travel, research, equipment, prototypes, and whatever else the work actually requires. This is a grant, not a loan and not an investment. +EV takes 0% equity for it.

Build something worth betting on.

BEYOND THE GRANT

Compute and space, not just cash.

Up to $25,000 in compute/cloud credits. On top of your grant, fellows can receive compute/cloud credits for work that needs serious computing power, like AI, simulation, and data analysis. The amount depends on what your work actually needs.

Free lab and coworking space in certain cities. Where we have space, you can use it for free. It's there if you want it, and nothing about where you work is mandatory. Exact cities and details will be confirmed as we finalize logistics.

CONNECTIONS

We connect you to the right people.

Some people don't mainly need money. They need the right introduction: a VC who understands the space, a scientist who can pressure-test the approach, an operator who has been there before, or a policymaker who can open a door. Tell us who you need to meet and we'll do our best to get you in the room. Our mentors and their networks are the starting point.

WHERE

Build wherever makes sense. Gather in person, from time to time.

There's no required home base and no relocation mandate. A biotech company might be better built near a wet lab in North Carolina than in whatever city we happen to be based in. From time to time we host in-person events: dinners, small gatherings, and introductions to the people you most need to meet. None of it is mandatory, we want you spending your time building, but we're here for you and there will be events. In certain cities, we also offer free lab and coworking space, with free catering at the coworking space. Build wherever makes the most sense for your work. Exact dates and locations for these gatherings will be confirmed as we finalize logistics.

NOT A VC

We don't invest in people.

+EV is a private foundation, not a fund. We take no equity, no IP, and no cut of anything. We exist to unlock young people and get them on the right path. If you decide to raise money, we'll gladly introduce you to investors, but whether to raise, when, and from whom is entirely your call.

WHO WE LEARNED FROM

Modeled on Tyler Cowen's Emergent Ventures and the Thiel Fellowship.

Both exist to unblock young people with top 1% ambition. +EV borrows what works from each.

EMERGENT VENTURES

Tyler Cowen's grant program at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. It backs people of any age, anywhere in the world, with unusual “zero to one” ideas, runs on a short application with very little bureaucracy, and has funded everyone from teenage programmers to podcasters.

THIEL FELLOWSHIP

Started by Peter Thiel's foundation in 2011 to back young people who want to build instead of following the standard path through college. It has supported 300+ fellows, including the founders of Ethereum and Figma, and pairs funding with a network of founders, investors, and scientists.

Where we differ: we give grants of many sizes, from $1K to $50K, based on what you actually need. We put as much weight on introductions as on money. And we are open to more than companies, including media brands and research.

THE REAL GOAL

The goal is to unblock you.

We find unusually talented, unconventional people and help them chase an ambitious idea. The grant and the introductions are a launching point, not the point.

We want you to keep building and keep using the network, whether that means raising money for this project, starting a different one, or something else entirely. Ideally you graduate: raise capital, go through an accelerator, or pursue bigger grants for your research. Follow-on grants are possible based on progress, but they are never promised upfront.

HOW APPLICATIONS ARE REVIEWED

Experts in your area, not one gatekeeper.

Applications are sorted by area, and we have dozens of people reviewing them. An expert in climate tech reviews climate applications, an expert in biotech reviews biotech applications, and so on. No one person makes the decision on your acceptance or rejection.
